first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Jeff Reese, OCJ marketing specialistThis is a busy time of year for everyone involved in agriculture. If you are not in a field working you are most likely in some form of support role. I have never been directly responsible for the helping with the grain farming but since the loss of my 98-year-old Grandpa two months ago I have felt a pull to the farm.My uncle has been the “farmer” in our family for as long as I can remember but my grandpa was always there with him. His brother has been a major piece of the puzzle but my grandpa was always there. With the loss of Grandpa things are just a little different. My wife and I have joked that maybe between the two of us we can help to fill the void Grandpa left helping my uncle on the farm. She can be the brains and I can try not to break things. The truth is that because my Grandpa was always there we didn’t grow up in the tractor or in the field. Things are just going to be different now that Grandpa isn’t around. It was with this in mind that I called my uncle up on a beautiful Monday evening and asked what I could do to help. What I really wanted to do was sit out in the sun and wait for the groundhog that had been digging up our tree fields. Visions of me triumphantly slaying this irksome beast and then hunting for mushrooms had me wavering on my promise to help. Ultimately my desire to help my uncle won the day, and that groundhog will have to wait until the crops are in the ground. Priorities are just different now that Grandpa isn’t around. My anxiety to help in the fields is real. My fear is that I will break or mess something up and cost more time than I am saving. But things have a funny way of working out. What my uncle really needed help with was tilling the garden. This is a job I can confidently accomplish! The scope of the garden was not something I had taken into consideration, though. See, my Grandpa loved sweet corn, he loved squash, he loved tomatoes, he loved onions and he loved potatoes too. My Grandpa had a prolific garden and even at 98 he was planning on growing enough for him, my uncle and the surrounding community to share. It was not unusual to see asparagus exchanges in the church parking lot on Sunday mornings or coolers full or sweet corn dropped on a neighbor’s porch. I have fond memories of hot summer mornings husking corn in the shade so that we could freeze enough to last through the winter. It may be different without my Grandpa but maybe I can help keep his memory alive in my own small way this year.As I fired up the tiller I had visions of perfectly straight lines with no footprints in the freshly tilled garden soil. I fought to keep the tiller in line and make everything perfect. I wanted to make Grandpa proud. Then something dawned on me, Grandpa wasn’t about doing everything perfectly. He was about doing it right. Grandpa worked this exact ground with a horse drawn plow as a child. He has kept it in his family for his 98 years. Clearly he was doing something right. Being a part of the farm can take on many different shapes. Each job requires a different set of skills, but they all take a level of determination to do it right, to the best of your ability. I realized that maybe I can’t do everything the way he did and it will take time to learn the best way to do things. I just hope, in one small way, that maybe things didn’t have to be so different even though Grandpa isn’t around this year.last_img read more

first_imgExhorting the government to involve slum dwellers in the development of the city, Campaign for Housing and Tenurial Rights Convenor Varghese Theckanath on Monday said those living on bunds were worried in the wake of canal beautification projects and demanded that they not be relocated. “About 26% of the city population lives in slums, one-third of which are located on canal bunds. The government’s plan to transform canals should not disturb dwellers who have been living on the same lands for decades,” he said at a press conference here. Stating that most slum dwellers were employed in blue collar jobs, he added, “Driving them away from the city would burden their lives and cost them jobs. They are an integral part of the city and the government should ensure they remain so” Vijayawada Slum People’s Federation Convenor Chinni concurred with him and said they were not against the beautification of the city but demanded involvement in it. Calling for relocating slums to neighbouring areas, Housing Rights Network city Coordinator Sanjeev and Monfort Social Institute city Coordinator P. Ravindra Babu said RTI applications had been filed to find out available land for the same. Under threatTo gauge the impact of projects, a survey by the NGOs revealed that more than 36,000 persons of 8,000 families resided in the 31 slums on the bunds of Bandar, Ryves and Eluru canals and Budameru rivulet in the city.last_img read more

first_imgFrom K J M VarmaBeijing, Jul 13 (PTI) Grappling with the international tribunals verdict quashing its claims over the South China Sea, China today turned down US advise to follow Indias example of settling its maritime row with Bangladesh by implementing the judgement saying that there is “no comparison” between the two cases.”There is a premise for the settlement of the relevant territorial dispute between India and Bangladesh through arbitration, that is, the two respected each others sovereign wills and reached an agreement on the arbitration request through consultation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told PTI here.”It is not like imposing one partys will on the other” unlike the Philippines which “unilaterally” filed the petition in Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), he said in response to question over US Assistant Secretary of Defence for East Asia Abraham Denmarks recent comments that China should follow Indias example of resolving its maritime boundary dispute with Bangladesh by implementing the award by a similar tribunal appointed by the PCA.India accepted the award which was given in favour of Bangladesh to resolve the over 40-year maritime row.The tribunal awarded Bangladesh 19,467 sq km of area in Bay Bengal in 2014. “To Indias great credit, it accepted the decision and has abided by it, noting at the time that settlement of the issue would enhance mutual understanding and goodwill between the two countries. This is an example we would encourage China to follow,” Denmark told lawmakers at a Congressional hearing in Washington last week.advertisement”The arbitral tribunals upcoming ruling will present an opportunity for those in the region to determine whether the Asia-Pacifics future will be defined by adherence to international laws and norms that have helped keep the peace and enabled it to prosper, or whether the regions future will be determined by raw calculations of power,” Denmark said.China however emphatically rejected the verdict questioning the legality of the tribunal.Lu said previous Philippines President Benigno S Aquino unilaterally opted for arbitration and “imposed” it on China.”By doing that the Aquino administration severely violated the agreement between China and Philippines and the consensus in the region, breached relevant provisions under UN Convention on Law of Seas (UNCLOS), infringed upon Chinas right as a sovereign state and state party to UNCLOS to resolve disputes by means of its own choice and went against international law,” he said.”Therefore there is no comparison between the two things,” he said.China claims almost all of the South China Sea but its claims are fiercely contested by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. first_img(Phys.org)—Researchers have shown that tomato pulp dissolved in water can eventually be turned into a powder of nanoparticles containing carbon dots with diameters of less than 5 nm. Like all carbon dots, one of the main characteristics of the tomato-sourced carbon dots is an intense fluorescence, which may lead to applications in imaging and sensing. Journal information: Nanotechnology More information: Weijian Liu et al. “Highly crystalline carbon dots from fresh tomato: UV emission and quantum confinement.” Nanotechnology. DOI: 10.1088/1361-6528/aa900b The researchers, led by Jinping Wang at Qingdao Agricultural University, have published a paper on the synthesis of carbon dots from tomato in a recent issue of Nanotechnology.Carbon dots are a new class of fluorescence nanomaterial that researchers are investigating as a possible alternative to semiconductor quantum dots and organic dyes. Because they are so new, the quantum mechanisms underlying their fluorescence are still not well understood. Carbon dots can come from many different sources, from carbon nanotubes to various kinds of biomass, such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and dots from different sources exhibit different fluorescence properties. An advantage of using tomatoes as the source of carbon dots is that tomatoes are inexpensive and the process is relatively simple. Basically, fresh tomato is chopped into pieces, crushed to a pulp by a tissue compactor, dissolved in water, heated in a microwave, centrifuged to remove any large particles, and then filtered by dialysis, leaving behind a solid powder of nanoparticles. Although the process is simple, the researchers showed that it still has the potential to produce high-quality carbon dots. One of the most important results of the new study is the UV fluorescence properties of the carbon dots can be controlled due to the quantum confinement effect, which is not often the case with carbon dots sourced from biomass. Here, the researchers demonstrated that, by adding certain organic compounds (ethylenediamine (EDA) and urea), they could control the size and tune the fluorescence of the nanoparticles formed from the tomato pulp.”Fresh tomato-sourced carbon dots tuned by urea can emit fluorescence in the UV region due to the quantum confinement effect,” Wang told Phys.org. “Our future research plan is to obtain red emissive carbon dots using biomass as precursors.”To illustrate the potential applications, the researchers evaluated the carbon dots for their use as staining agents for bioimaging fungi, and also as sensors for vanillin, which has applications in the biofuel industry. The researchers demonstrated that the carbon dots were highly biocompatible with the fungi and became brightly illuminated when excited by a laser. In the case of vanillin sensing, they showed that the vanillin quenches the fluorescence of the carbon dots, with the amount of quenching being proportional to the vanillin concentration. The researchers plan to further investigate these applications and others in the future. Researchers transform fresh tomatoes into three types of carbon nanoparticles.
