first_imgSINN Power has attached two supporting structures for its wave energy converter (WEC) modules to the port wall in Heraklion on Crete, Greece, where the company will install and commission the first two of the total of five of its devices in early July. All five wave energy converter modules, with the revised SINN Power technology, are expected to be installed on the port wall by 2019.The two WEC modules are funded by the German Federal Government and primarily serve to test the updated technology for its functionality. This spring, the production of the individual components, which took place mostly in Germany, was completed and the WEC modules were then transported to Greece by truck. After the arrival of the truck with the components in early May, the SINN Power engineering team began welding the supporting structures, which were recently attached to the breakwater wall. The lifting rods, generators and floating bodies will be assembled in the coming weeks.Once the further three WECs are in place, they will allow for testing the electrical connection of several generators in practice and thus serve the further development of the innovative wave energy technology, the German wave energy developer said.Illustration of the planned WEC test modules at the project site in Heraklion, Crete. They monitor the mechanical loads of the revised WEC modules and evaluate the data on the generated electricity. In August 2017, the company was awarded a €1.0 million grant from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) to expand its research activities on Crete with additional wave energy converters next to its WEC prototype installed in 2015 at the breakwater wall of the Port of Heraklion.Following the successful completion of the test on the wall-mounted wave energy modules, SINN Power plans to test a floating version of its wave energy converter technology. The planned floating wave energy converter will consist of 18 modules.last_img read more

first_imgLondon: Pakistan fans have made their displeasure known on social media ever since the team’s poor show against arch-rivals India in their World Cup encounter in Manchester and a fresh video has surfaced wherein skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed has been compared to a fat pig.Sarfaraz was walking in a mall in England with his son on his lap when a fan stopped him and asked why he was looking like a fat pig. The fan then posted the video on social media. This is not the first time when fans have crossed the line and gotten personal with the Pakistan players. In fact, photos of Shoaib Malik, his wife Sania Mirza and Wahab Riaz partying on the eve of the India-Pakistan game started doing the rounds soon after their loss to Virat Kohli and boys on June 16.In a game that was completely dominated by India, Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir was the only bright spot as he returned figures of 3/47 from his 10 overs. And while the fans were not pleased and took to social media to ridicule the players, Amir had requested them to not use bad words even though they were free to criticise the players.Taking to Twitter, Amir wrote: “Pls dont use bad words for the players yes u guys can criticise our performance we will bounce back InshAllah we need ur support (sic).”Shoaib Malik also added his bit on Twitter and wrote: “On behalf of all athletes I would like to request media and people to maintain respect levels in regards to our families, who should not be dragged into petty discussions at will. It’s not a nice thing to do.”Interestingly, the Pakistan Cricket Board had come out with a clarification that the photos of the players dining and partying till late on the eve of the high-voltage clash was actually not from the eve of the game.“The cricketers did not violate their curfew,” a PCB spokesperson told DawnNewsTV.“The videos and photographs that went viral (on social media) are from two days before the match. The day before the match against India, all the players were in their hotel rooms by curfew time.” IANS Also Read: Fan apologizes for derogatory personal remark on Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmedlast_img read more

first_img Italian bookmakers face cruel summer as ADM sanctions shop closures July 27, 2020 Share Di Maio’s man Giacomo Lasorella takes leadership of AGCOM August 17, 2020 After decades of decline, Italian horse racing has been thrown a lifeline in the form of the country’s latest Budget Law. Most notably, the turnover-based tax regime that has been so detrimental has been replaced by a new gross gaming revenue (GGR) tax.The GGR tax regime for horse racing is based on that already implemented in the sports betting sector. However, horse racing taxes – set at 43% for retail bets and 47% for online – remain significantly higher than the 18% and 22% that land-based and online sports betting has to deal with.  The situation has been further improved by the loosening of strict laws, with this liberalisation expected to lead to industry growth. Previously, betting on horses was restricted to official betting lists published by Italian gaming authority ADM, but the Budget Law has relaxed this. After sports betting laws were similarly relaxed, the Italian gaming market witnessed sizeable growth, and it is hoped it will have the same effect on horse racing. Additionally, the Budget Law postponed the country’s proposed new betting licenses, so to allow local municipalities time to change their laws accordingly. The existing betting shop and corner licenses have been extended for the full year, against the payment of an annual extension fee of €6000 per betting shop and €3500 per betting corner. A new tender for betting shops and corner licenses also aims to take in €410 million by the end of September. first_imgAt 44, Chuck Noll had joined an elite level of NFL coaches with Vince Lombardi and Don Shula after the win in Super Bowl X. Noll, hired at 37, endured a 12-30 record in his first three seasons in Pittsburgh before the success came. (Phil Sandlin, AP)Chuck Noll. You see the name and you immediately think four time Super Bowl winning coach. Noll was one of the best to ever coach the game and fortunately for the Steelers, he spent his entire 22 year head coaching career with the black and gold. After being a defensive assistant with the Chargers for six seasons and then three more years under Don Shula in Baltimore, Noll was hired as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969 at the age of 37.Noll struggled out of the gates only winning 12 games in his first 42 tries and not making the playoffs until his fourth year with the Steelers.  By year six, the team that would form the eventual dynasty of the 70’s was born and Noll led his Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl titles in a span of six seasons. In 22 seasons, Noll compiled a record of 209-156-1, won nine division championships, four conference titles and four super bowl championships as well.  Two years after his retirement, Noll was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.Noll was the father of the Steelers as we know them. Without him, the expectation to win a championship each year would not exist, the team would not have the most Super Bowl rings in league history and the rabid fan base may not even exist as it does today. Noll was a winner through and through and a true representation of the Pittsburgh culture. The Steelers were unsuccessful through their first four decades, when they appeared in just one postseason game. Then in 1969, the Steelers hired Chuck Noll, left, as head coach and he, with a core of players including QB Terry Bradshaw, changed the fortunes of the franchise. first_imgSubmitted by Barb Lally for Rob Rice HomesThe Rice family believes in giving back to the community they love.Throughout the entire year Rob Rice and his family generously provide time and support for organizations where they can make a real difference.“We feel it is our responsibility to give back to the community where we have been building homes for more than 30 years,” says Rob. “This is where we live, work and raise our children, and we want to help make it a better place for our family and those in the communities we build.”Their efforts extend far beyond issuing a check to the causes they believe in, they back their support with real action. In 2011 Rob and his wife Helena had determined that they needed to specify a goal for annual giving so they made the decision to prioritize children’s needs and homeless pets as causes to help. Now they extend their hands and hearts to two organizations that improve the lives of children and that aid rescue animals.“There are so many well-deserving charities in our community but we needed to pinpoint two so we could really make a difference,” says Helena.Caring for Animals“When I married Rob, I had three rescue dogs and he was living in a pet-free home; it was quite a change for him,” laughs Helena, who grew up in a family that has always helped animals in need. “It didn’t take long though and within a few months he was traveling around with one of my dogs and even taking her to the office to work for the day.”Now she says Rob has a soft heart for rescue animals, even picking them up in communities where he builds to make sure they get to their“Lewis” was lucky to be rescued by Rob Rice on I-5.homes or a shelter where they can be helped.“Just recently Rob stopped on I-5 on the North Fork Lewis River Bridge in Clark County when he saw a confused dog running in the freeway,” Helena says. “Rob had to crawl underneatha truck to eventually get the poor thing out. Rob brought the dog home, took him for veterinary care and we took care of him until we found the perfect owner. One of our staff is now the dog’s proud owner so Rob still gets to see ‘Lewis’ who is named after the bridge where he was rescued.”Every year, the Rice’s, along with other business owners, sponsor a fundraising auction for Concern for Animals, an organization that for 34 years has assisted low income families with the food and medical needs of their pets and rescue animals. But they wanted to do more.“Rob and Helena met with us and asked how they could help us,” says Janey Hanson president of Concern for Animals. “We had bought an older 1920s home for our offices after operating out of people’s homes for years. We showed them our lengthy wish list so they could pick a project. What happened next was amazing.”The new Concern for Animals building was completely remodeled by Rob Rice and his sub-contractors at no charge.Janey says that the local builder sought the help of many of his sub-contractors who donated their time and materials to completely remodel the home. Rob even assigned one of his superintendents to coordinate the work. The long list of sub-contractors who contributed is on the group’s website.“They cleaned out our project wish list,” says Janey. “They even sent in a designer so we could pick our color pallet. They remodeled the kitchen with new flooring, cabinets, counters and backsplash; they fixed a major drainage problem under the house and repaired the basement so we had plenty of room for our food bank. They painted, fixed our ceiling, worked on our heating system and did electrical work and even leveled our parking lot. The list is long.”The group says it would have taken years to complete but Rob and his sub-contractors did it all in just a few months resulting in an office and food bank that will help hundreds of pet owners and their animals.Contributing to Kids “Our son Alex attended the Hands On Children’s Museum of Olympia school for 3 years,” says Helena. “When Rob and I went to his first parent-teacher conference, we realized what a unique learning atmosphere it is and how beneficial the museum is to children in our community, so we decided we wanted to donate our time and resources to this great institution.”Helena began co-chairing the museum’s fundraising breakfast that provides admission for Free Friday Night and then when the new museum was in design stages both she and Rob agreed to provide an entire exhibit that offers kids an experience in construction, a field they know a bit about. The Build It! exhibit allows children to don hard hats and safety goggles while they use builder boards to build a home or they create a Keva structure.Around the CommunityThe Build It! exhibit, contributed by the Rice’s, gets rave reviews at the Hands on Children’s Museum. There are many other organizations where Helena and Rob donate their time and resources.Rob is a lifetime director for the Olympia Master Builders Association and an active board member of Thurston Economic Development Council. He is also well known for presiding over the Home Owners Associations in the communities he builds to help maintain their quality and value.Rob is a founder of Thurston First Bank, initially helping to start the bank and currently chairing several committees for its board. Helena is a shareholder in the bank as well.Helena has served on boards for the Pacific Mountain Workforce Development Council and the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce and currently volunteers for the PTO program at East Olympia Elementary, Alex’s school. The Rice’s support Saint Martin’s University, Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County and the South Sound YMCA and Rob coaches most of his children’s sports teams, whether it is basketball, football or baseball.Helena admits it all keeps them very busy yet they don’t usually turn away requests for help.“We feel overjoyed to help out this amazing community,” she says. “It is a proven fact that people who give are happier and healthier. That is sure true in our family’s case.”Rob Rice is Thurston County’s largest local home builder and was voted the Best of South Sound for 2013. He has built more than 3000 homes over the last 30 years.
