first_imgA member of Gov. Kay Ivey staff tweeted a picture of Ivey signing the abortion bill into law last night. In the past 24 hours, the tweet has received a lot of engagement from opponents of the bill. As of this afternoon, the governor’s tweet had over 37,000 likes and over 60,000 comments. One prominent commentator is conservative evangelist Pat Robertson, who said he believes Alabama’s legislature made a mistake.“I think Alabama has gone too far,” Robertson said. “There’s no exception for rape or incest. It’s an extreme or all that they want to challenge Roe vs. Wade, but my humble view is that this isn’t the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose.”The vast majority of the comments are very negative, made by abortion advocates and activists from other states. The governor said costly court battles are worth the expense to protect life.“You certainly cannot deter your efforts to protect the unborn because of cost,” Ivey said.Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act. To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God. https://t.co/DwKJyAjSs8 pic.twitter.com/PIUQip6nmw— Governor Kay Ivey (@GovernorKayIvey) May 15, 2019last_img
